From July 19 to 22, 2026, the Joint Annual Meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and the Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists (COMP) opened grandly in Vancouver, Canada. As one of the most influential academic gatherings in the global medical physics community, this year's conference brought together medical physicists, researchers, educators, and industry leaders from around the world to discuss cutting-edge advances in medical imaging, radiation therapy, and related fields.
Three Research Presentations by GCCC's Physics Team
At this year's meeting, the radiotherapy physics team of Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center (GCCC) showcased three research achievements, including one poster discussion and two digital poster presentations, fully demonstrating the institute's research strength and academic accumulation in the field of medical physics. The main studies covered the latest findings in areas such as precise dose calculation for proton therapy, prediction models for radiation dermatitis in head-and-neck proton therapy, and the development and validation of a domestic treatment planning system.
The three accepted submissions were:
- PO-DPV-T-105 — Dosimetric Comparison of Proton Therapy Plans for Breast Cancer between Eclipse and Curaproton (First author: Zihan Lu)
- PO-DPV-T-134 — Type Testing Validation of Dose Calculation Accuracy for Intensity-Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) for a Newly Developed Treatment Planning System Curaproton (First author: Zhangmin Li)
- SU-315-GPD-T-427 — Investigation and Modelling of Radiation Dermatitis Related to Radiobiological Dose In Proton Therapy of Head and Neck Cancer (First author: Yang Shen)
Prof. Yuanshui Zheng: Sole Chinese Hospital Representative on PTSC
Prof. Yuanshui Zheng, Director of the Medical Physics Group in the Radiotherapy Department at GCCC, was invited to attend this year's annual meeting and participate in key agendas of the AAPM Particle Therapy Subcommittee (PTSC). This subcommittee is responsible for coordinating and advancing task groups and working groups related to particle therapy. It has 22 voting members from multiple proton centers worldwide, among whom Prof. Yuanshui Zheng is the only member from a Chinese medical institution on the current PTSC committee.
Particle Therapy Subcommittee Meeting Highlights
The PTSC in-person meeting was held at 5:00 PM Pacific Time on July 19 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The meeting discussed progress reports from multiple particle therapy Task Groups (TGs), including:
- AAPM TG350 — Multi-institutional planning, delivery, and dosimetry comparison for proton pencil-beam scanning (Prof. Yuanshui Zheng is a working group member)
- TG427 — Technical guidelines for proton therapy clinical trials
- TG466 — Recommended applications of dual-energy CT in proton therapy treatment planning
In addition, the meeting introduced arrangements for proton therapy-related special sessions during the annual meeting, covering frontier topics such as re-irradiation with protons, the photon-versus-proton debate, proton therapy planning practice patterns, and future proton systems through PTCOG-AAPM collaboration.

PhD in Nuclear Engineering from North Carolina State University; postdoctoral fellow at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Board-certified medical physicist by the American Board of Radiology; standing member of the AAPM Particle Therapy Committee; member of TG 350 Report Working Group; Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Radiology and Oncology. He also serves as a standing member of the Professional Committee on Oncology Particle Therapy and Technology of the China Association for Medical Devices Industry, and is recognized as an Elite Talent of Guangzhou Development District Huangpu Zone.
With over 30 years of experience in radioactive application, clinical work, and research, he has previously served as Research Director of the Breast Center at the University of North Carolina, Associate Professor at Oklahoma State University, Director of Medical Physics at ProCure Proton Therapy Center, and Chief Physicist at Atlanta Healthcare Group. His expertise includes proton therapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy / stereotactic body radiotherapy, adaptive radiotherapy, and other new technology development, application, and quality assurance. He has published more than 200 books, articles, and abstracts domestically and internationally.
