Chinese and Cambodian representatives pose at the Proton Therapy Center, marking a new chapter in cross-border medical cooperation
On July 16, 2026, at the invitation of Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center (GCCC), a Cambodian medical delegation led by Professor Dr. Eav Sokha, founder of Orange Cancer Clinic and a renowned hematologist-oncologist, along with co-founders of SBOK Healthcare, visited GCCC for a one-day academic exchange and in-depth site visit. The two sides held substantive and practical discussions on topics including the current state of cancer care in Cambodia and trends in cross-border patient travel, the frontier of proton therapy technology, international patient referral service systems, and advantages in surgical oncology.
Professor Dr. Eav Sokha is a pioneer and founding figure in Cambodian oncology. He formerly served as Head of the Department of Hematology-Oncology at Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh, where he led the establishment of Cambodia's first national comprehensive cancer center. He has long collaborated with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to build local radiotherapy capacity. In 2021, he founded Orange Cancer Clinic, the country's first private independent cancer hospital. Having completed advanced training in oncology and radiotherapy in Vietnam, France, and the United States, he is not only an expert in comprehensive cancer management but also one of the few professionals in Southeast Asia who master both the infrastructure planning and clinical operations of cancer centers. Dr. Eav Sokha has long been committed to improving Cambodia's domestic cancer diagnosis and treatment system and to reducing the plight of patients forced to seek care abroad due to inadequate local resources.

Accompanied by the hospital team, the delegation toured GCCC's core clinical areas, including the first Varian ProBeam® proton therapy system in South China (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan), linear accelerators, the International Patient Service Center, and inpatient wards.
During the tour, the hospital highlighted the physical principles, clinical indications, and quality control system of proton therapy. Discussing the Current State of Cancer Care in Cambodia and Cross-border Medical Needs
At the symposium, Dr. Eav Sokha systematically shared the current situation and challenges of Cambodia's oncology care system. He pointed out that oncology resources are heavily concentrated in the capital Phnom Penh, while provincial medical institutions have weak capacity in cancer treatment. The national inventory of radiotherapy equipment is far below the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended standards, leaving many patients with a 'diagnosis but no treatment' dilemma. Thousands of patients each year are forced to travel to Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, and other countries for radiotherapy.
Dr. Eav Sokha remarked that China's progress in advanced radiotherapy technologies such as proton therapy has left a deep impression on him, and GCCC's proton therapy and mature international patient service system offer a new high-quality option for Cambodian cancer patients.

In the subsequent academic exchange session, the multidisciplinary team of GCCC presented systematic introductions from four dimensions: physics technology, clinical advantages, service processes, and surgical specialties.
Professor Zheng Yuanshui, GCCC's medical physics expert, gave a professional explanation of the performance parameters, routine quality control, optimization design of individualized treatment plans, and the full-process precision implementation and quality assurance of the proton therapy system, demonstrating GCCC's rigorous quality control system and international standards for the safe and precise delivery of proton therapy.
Dr. Li Juan, Chief Radiotherapy Physician at GCCC, systematically elaborated on the clinical advantages and technical features of proton therapy, showcasing its outstanding value in precise dose delivery and normal tissue sparing through clinical practice in head and neck cancers, pediatric tumors, thoracic tumors, and ocular tumors.
Associate Chief Surgeon Xie Xiaoming shared GCCC's technical strengths in surgical oncology, focusing on the minimally invasive surgery-centered surgical system, the multidisciplinary team (MDT) model, and the extensive application and effectiveness of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) across clinical pathways. He also presented the surgical team's integrated online-offline full-course patient management and personalized WeChat group communication and tracking service model, ensuring that patients receive precise and continuous medical care from preoperative assessment, perioperative management, to postoperative rehabilitation and follow-up.
Deputy Director of Nursing Zhou Minping introduced the comprehensive service system that GCCC has built for international patients. This system covers every step of cross-border medical care—from remote consultation, medical records organization and liaison, visa assistance, airport pickup and accommodation, to in-hospital interpretation, medical reports translation, daily care, and post-treatment remote follow-up management—ensuring that patients complete the entire treatment process smoothly upon arrival, delivering a 'one-stop' cross-border medical experience and effectively eliminating concerns for international patients and their family members.
Case Manager Ren Hui further explained the core role and work path of a case manager. As the hub of whole-course disease management, the case manager integrates assessment, planning, care implementation, coordination, and monitoring, and participates in every step of the patient journey from initial visit accompaniment, assistance with special disease insurance and hospitalization procedures, daily ward rounds with physicians to track treatment progress, to regular post-discharge follow-up on rehabilitation status, ensuring continuity and coordination throughout the care continuum.

At the conclusion of the exchange, Dr. Eav Sokha stated that the visit was an extremely enlightening learning journey, and the systematic practices of GCCC in proton therapy and international patient services left a strong impression on him. Both sides agreed that this exchange should serve as a starting point for deepening dialogue and cooperation in areas such as cancer diagnosis and treatment, academic visits, personnel training, and patient referrals, and for jointly exploring the establishment of a long-term mechanism for Sino-Cambodian oncology collaboration, so as to provide Cambodian cancer patients with better and more accessible cross-border medical options.
