Lin Dongyong, Party Secretary and Director of Huangpu District Health Bureau, addressing the GCCC 5th anniversary international healthcare roundtable
Five years after its founding, Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center (GCCC) has become more than the home of South China's first proton therapy system outside Hong Kong and Macao. It has turned the principle of precision medicine into a working, verifiable system that now serves patients from more than 20 countries and regions.
On June 24, 2026, GCCC hosted a "Precision Medicine & Proton Escort Team" launch event. At its center was a roundtable on regional international healthcare development, bringing together government leaders, hospital executives, insurers, referral agencies, and an international patient to discuss what makes the Greater Bay Area a destination for cross-border care.

Three Core Reasons: Safety, Standardization, and Full-Journey Support
Professor Qian Chaonan, President of Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center, framed the decision of international patients in three words: safety, standardization, and full-journey support. Technology is the foundation, he said, but what earns trust abroad is a patient-centered support system that works seamlessly from first contact to follow-up.

That system, built over five years, rests on three pillars:
- Full-journey coordination: From pre-arrival medical record review and cross-border referral coordination to medical-visa assistance and post-treatment follow-up, the hospital manages every step so patients can "enter, be treated, and live with peace of mind."
- Multilingual service: Professional translators ensure medical information is accurately conveyed and patients can make informed decisions.
- Cultural and daily-life care: Dietary preferences, religious observance, family accommodation, and help with local services are treated as integral to treatment, not optional extras.
"These soft supports are not add-ons," Professor Qian emphasized. "They are part of the precision system."
A Patient's Voice: "I Can Trust My Treatment Here"
The roundtable began with a patient from Indonesia, Mr. Henky, who is currently receiving proton therapy at GCCC for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. He had considered hospitals in Malaysia, he said, but chose Guangzhou on a friend's recommendation.

Two things convinced him. The first was the technology: the proton system is advanced, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma — often called the "Canton tumor" — has been treated with deep experience in Guangdong. The second was the everyday support: staff helped him set up his phone, taught him to use Alipay and WeChat, and helped find suitable housing.
"These small things reduced the anxiety of being in a foreign country," he said. "I felt I could trust my treatment here." Clear treatment planning and direct-billing partnerships with international insurers removed the remaining financial uncertainty.
City, Insurer, and Referral Partners Join the Ecosystem
International care cannot work without a wider ecosystem. Zheng Yong, Director of the Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City Cooperation Affairs Office, said that healthcare is not only about medical outcomes but also about "city temperature." GCCC's experience in cross-border referral, medical-device introduction, remote consultation, and industry-academia collaboration will bring new energy to the Knowledge City international health industry cluster.

Zheng Weining, Deputy General Manager of Knowledge City Business Travel Development Company, added that the district is planning a comprehensive service environment covering accommodation, transport, commerce, dining, and cultural leisure so that patients and families can "live comfortably, travel smoothly, and enjoy convenience."
Liu Xiaoyi, General Manager of PrimePath Asia, explained how referral agencies choose partners. "The only standard is patient benefit," he said. "If we add efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and human care, Chinese medicine has a clear structural advantage. GCCC, supported by the Greater Bay Area's location and transport efficiency, becomes even more attractive."
Roundtable panel: International Healthcare Development Is Timely
Wang Weili, Operations Expert at Ant Health International Medical Business, addressed the insurance angle. Mainland China offers strong cost-effectiveness and professional quality, and commercial insurance can already cover most treatment costs. To improve direct-billing experience, he said, data flow, capital flow, and business flow still need to be better aligned.
From Hardware Import to System Output
Lin Dongyong, Party Secretary and Director of Huangpu District Health Bureau, had earlier praised GCCC's practice in proton therapy clinical operation, international-standard localization, and cross-border patient service as a reference model for building the Greater Bay Area into an international healthcare hub.

The roundtable made the path concrete: a multi-role, full-chain, patient-centered ecosystem uniting hospitals, financial institutions, insurers, referral agencies, and city-service providers. The Greater Bay Area's healthcare industry is moving from importing equipment to exporting integrated care systems.
When patients cross mountains and seas, they are not choosing a single device or a single technique. They are choosing a complete system they can entrust with their lives and health, and a city that offers both clinical excellence and human warmth. That, the event concluded, is the deeper meaning of precision medicine at Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center: see the system, and see the life.
